About Our Company

Celebrating their 25th year of business in Porterville, the Ennis Family is reflecting on the past, the place they still call home and the people who have been a part of their lives for the past 25 years.

When Ben Ennis and his wife Roberta moved to California with their two young children, Pam and Brian, in 1969, they lived in Lindsay for a year before making their permanent home in Porterville. Ben soon began a career in real estate and eventually opened Ennis Realty.

Ben's daughter, Pam, began working at the office part-time while attending high school and joined the company full-time after graduating from Monache High School in 1979.

During this time, Ben started doing land development and soon began developing lots for local builders to purchase. The new business, Ennis Homes, developed more than 1,000 lots in the area that were sold to builders.

Ennis Homes took raw land and developed home sites by improving the land, paving the streets and making the area ready to build on, said Pam.

In 1991, Ben's son Brian, a graduate of Chico State with a degree in business management, joined the family business and the home building side was formed.

The decision to offer the whole home package was a natural progression, Pam said. They already had experience in the process and were very familiar with the people in the business. Each one's expertise complimented the others and that made for a successful combination.

As a result of the combined talents of Ben, Pam, and Brian, along with the outstanding staff and talented subcontractors, Ennis Homes has and continues to provide award winning, quality home construction throughout central California.

The Ennis family is actively involved in the building Industry Association and has received numerous awards for Builder of the Year, Member of the Year (twice), and Volunteer of the Year. In 1997, Ennis Homes built a new corporate office as part of a 400 acre master planned development. This corporate office located on Westwood Street in Porterville is now home to the six businesses that fall under the Ennis umbrella.

In 1999, Ennis Homes was among the 10 family-owned businesses nominated for the California Family Business Award. Also in 1999, Ennis Homes received the State Contributor Award given by the California Community College Association for Occupational Education. Porterville College, in conjunction with the Tulare County Coalition, Porterville Unified School District and Building Industry Association of Kings and Tulare counties, nominated Ennis Homes for the award.

In 2002, they received the Institute for Family Business Award for Medium Size Family Business, for their devotion to their families, employees and customers.
In 2003, the City of Porterville and the Porterville Chamber of Commerce awarded Ennis Homes the Excellence in Business award saluting them as one of the businesses in Porterville that contributes to the economic and social well-being of the community.

Throughout the years our goal has been to be a successful family owned company, Pam said. We have achieved that and we are always looking to grow, but at a healthy rate. We want to grow without compromising our core values and the quality of the homes we build.

Currently, Ennis Homes has neighborhoods under construction in five counties, with a number of new neighborhoods in the design phase. Ennis Homes is currently in the early phases of construction on developments in Delano and McFarland as well as expanding new divisions in Tulare, Visalia and several other cities where they have been currently building.

Ennis Homes owns 190 acres of land on the west side of Westwood Estates. The family is currently planning to build Porterville’s first lake-themed community. The community will incorporate higher end housing surrounded by water. Construction on this development is expected to begin in 2006.

Today, Ben Ennis is the C.E.O. of Ennis Homes, an always expanding company. Brian Ennis serves as president and runs the company, overseeing the staff of 110 employees. Pam Ennis-Coons is the vice president and in charge of sales and marketing.
